Treating disease effectively can require a combination of methods, including the responsible use of antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern among health professionals as more strains of bacteria are demonstrating resistance to many of the antibiotics currently prescribed. New antibiotics, or treatment methods, are desperately needed but can be difficult to discover or produce. Earlier in this learning activity you took jot notes about a Canadian research lab that has synthesized a promising new antibiotic. In this magazine article you will be creating a summary of the information in the two articles that you have read.

Magazine Article #6

The blackout of 2003 discussed previously, was due, at least in part, to the high demand for electricity in the summertime. When temperatures are high, people resort to using air conditioners and fans more frequently. In fact, air conditioners and other space cooling appliances sucked up approximately 18% of all electricity used in 2016. These appliances can contribute significantly to the cost of your electricity bill, and also can place a huge burden on power grids.

Air conditioners and heat pumps use a series of energy transformations to convert electricity to thermal energy. Central to this process is the “refrigeration cycle”, which transforms motion energy into thermal energy. Understanding this process is an important step in explaining how air conditioners work, and is central to the career of a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technician.

In this magazine article you will be putting yourself in the shoes of an HVAC technician, describing the “refrigeration cycle” process, the energy transformations involved, what an air conditioner is and ways that individuals can increase the energy efficiency of these units.

Step 1: Begin by performing research on the career of an HVAC technician, air conditioners and the “refrigeration cycle”.

Use the following questions to guide your writing and research:

  • What is involved in being an HVAC technician? What general jobs or duties does an HVAC technician perform in their day-to-day work?
  • What are the education requirements, including highschool courses and postsecondary programs, and salary of an HVAC technician?
  • What are the hazards associated with being an HVAC technician?
  • What is an air conditioner? How does it work?
  • What is the refrigeration cycle? What are the energy transformations involved?
  • How can individuals increase the energy efficiency of their air conditioners or reduce their reliance on these appliances?

Step 2: Once you have answered the suggested questions in sufficient detail, compile your answers into a cohesive article. Please note, the article should be in your own works and written in first-person as you are pretending to be the expert here!

Success Criteria

  • I have written my interview in a way that another student/classmate would understand
  • I have a one paragraph (5-7 sentences) description of the role of an HVAC technician, including education requirements, day-to-day job tasks, salary, and hazards that may be encountered on the job
  • I have a one paragraph description of what an air conditioner is and how it works
  • I have described the refrigeration cycle and identified the energy transformations involved
  • I have a one paragraph description of how individuals can increase the energy efficiency of their air conditioners
  • I have proofread my article and corrected any errors
  • I have a list of “sources” (websites or print resources where I got my information) listed at the end of my notes
  • I have an informative title for my article

Staying safe at work - It’s easier than you think!

overloaded electrical plugs bars

We go to work every day, but most of us don’t think about the electrical hazards that might be lurking around every corner. Staying safe is important for you and your colleagues. It protects everyone! We’ve listed the Top Ten electrical safety best practices to follow while at work.

1. Avoid plugging multiple loads into a single outlet. Instead of plugging multiple loads into a single outlet, use different outlets in different locations of the house, when possible. This will help to avoid overloaded circuits.

2. Never stick objects into live electrical outlets or appliances. These objects may act as conductors, carrying electric current from the outlet or appliance to you. This can result in an electric shock, which can cause serious harm or fatality…

  • I have written my top ten list in a way that another student/classmate would understand
  • I have described why it is important and how it will help a worker stay safe for each best practice/recommendation
