Treating disease effectively can require a combination of methods, including the responsible use of antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern among health professionals as more strains of bacteria are demonstrating resistance to many of the antibiotics currently prescribed. New antibiotics, or treatment methods, are desperately needed but can be difficult to discover or produce. Earlier in this learning activity you took jot notes about a Canadian research lab that has synthesized a promising new antibiotic. In this magazine article you will be creating a summary of the information in the two articles that you have read.
Step 1: Begin by reading both articles (listed next) again. You should have generated jot notes in your notebook on each of the articles earlier in the learning activities, but if have not done so, complete this step now. Please recall, jot notes should be short and concise pieces of information in your own words that highlight the main idea and supporting points of the article.
Step 2: Once your jot notes are completed, compile your information into a summary of the two articles. Your summary should:
There are many careers that may involve biological hazards directly or may bring you into contact with these hazards, from nurses and health care workers to laboratory technicians, food service workers and custodial staff. In this magazine article you will be generating a fictional interview with a personal service worker (PSW).
Step 1: Consider what questions you might like to ask the PSW you are interviewing. Your end goal is to learn more about their profession, including safety and education.

The blackout of 2003 discussed previously, was due, at least in part, to the high demand for electricity in the summertime. When temperatures are high, people resort to using air conditioners and fans more frequently. In fact, air conditioners and other space cooling appliances sucked up approximately 18% of all electricity used in 2016. These appliances can contribute significantly to the cost of your electricity bill, and also can place a huge burden on power grids.
Air conditioners and heat pumps use a series of energy transformations to convert electricity to thermal energy. Central to this process is the “refrigeration cycle”, which transforms motion energy into thermal energy. Understanding this process is an important step in explaining how air conditioners work, and is central to the career of a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technician.
In this magazine article you will be putting yourself in the shoes of an HVAC technician, describing the “refrigeration cycle” process, the energy transformations involved, what an air conditioner is and ways that individuals can increase the energy efficiency of these units.
Step 1: Begin by performing research on the career of an HVAC technician, air conditioners and the “refrigeration cycle”.
Use the following questions to guide your writing and research:
Step 2: Once you have answered the suggested questions in sufficient detail, compile your answers into a cohesive article. Please note, the article should be in your own works and written in first-person as you are pretending to be the expert here!
As you have learned, e-waste has significant impacts on society and the environment. Most people have no idea the extent of electronic waste that exists on our planet, let alone how it is disposed of and processed. As consumers, we have a responsibility to understand how e-waste is generated, both at home and at work, and to take steps to reduce our contributions to this growing problem.
In this magazine article, you will be summarizing the main ideas surrounding electronic waste to your readers. You may use a graphic organizer similar to the one pictured next, or another of your choosing.
Step 1: Review the content of the learning activity, particularly those sections related to electronic waste, or perform additional research. You will be summarizing the main ideas surrounding e-waste to your readers, so ensuring you understand the issue yourself is important!
Use the following questions to guide your research and writing:
Step 2: Create a graphic organizer similar to the following one to share your information. Make sure to include detailed answers to each question, in a way that would help your readers understand the issue at hand.
In this unit, you have learned about the fundamentals of electricity, including how electricity is generated, measured, and used safely. Understanding the hazards of working with and around electricity is a key component of keeping you safe while on the job. In this magazine article, you will be using your understanding of electrical safety best practices and electrical hazards to generate a top ten list of safety recommendations while at work.
Step 1: Consider what practices you already employ to keep yourself safe around electricity. Review the content of the lesson for additional ideas or perform research on the Internet. Please note, all content must be in your own words! You need to generate a list of ten (10) best practices/recommendations and provide a description for each. Your description should include why it is important and how it will help a worker stay safe.
Step 2: Compile your top ten list into a cohesive article. Generate an informative title for your magazine article and add images to reinforce the ideas discussed.
You may use the following example as a guide - but may not use any of the recommendations provided in your own work.
